John Hammond, a Grammy Award-winning blues guitarist and a long-time icon of the music industry, will play at a
special benefit concert at Hermanns Jazz Club, Friday, March 12, 2010.
Hammond comes from a re-markable musical lineage. His father, John H. Hammond, worked as a talent scout for years
and, because of the many careers he helped to launch, is considered one of the most influential figures in 20th century
popular music. Those he discovered or helped along the way include Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Count Basie,
Pete Seeger, Aretha Franklin, George Benson, Leonard Cohen, Bruce Springsteen and Stevie Ray Vaughan. His
discovery of Bob Dylan was known as “Hammond’s folly” at Columbia Records — until Dylan’s career exploded.
John Hammond Jr. “is one degree of separation from virtually every musician who influenced anyone ages 30 to 60
who listens to music,” said Island singer/songwriter Pete Droge, who recalled one Hammond album — “I Can Tell,”
produced in 1967 — that he “couldn’t get enough of” when he was a kid.
“He did a cover of Willie Dixon’s ‘Shake for Me,’ which I listened to over and over again. Duane Allman (Allman
Brothers) plays slide guitar on that cut, and it may have been his finest moment.”
Lest you think Hammond is a blast from the past, his most recent album, “Push Comes to Shove” (2007), was named
international blues album of the year by Rhythms magazine and a top 10 selection in Amazon.com’s best music
selections in the blues and folk category. It has received glowing reviews from The Washington Post, American
Songwriter and many more.
The disc was produced by longtime Hammond fanatic G Love (Garret Dutton III) and features Stephen Hodges on
drums, Marty Ballou on bass and Bruce Katz on piano and organ. Hammond wrote an unprecedented five original
songs for the album, along with new renditions of tunes by Little Walter, Junior Wells, Tom Waits and more.
The Barra MacNeils (Celtic)

Tickets: $29.50 Advance + Service charge - TICKETS ON SALE FEBUARY 18

Throughout 2007 and 2008, the Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island based family group, the Barra MacNeils, celebrated
over 20 years in an outstanding recording and touring career. This was accented with a two CD special 20th
Anniversary package covering the span of their entire career to that point, as well as live concerts reflecting the
musical course of their career, from humble family beginnings to world wide acclaim. The concert touring in support of
that project took the group to theatre and festival stages coast to coast across Canada, had them jetting across
America from festival stage to theatre stage and beyond, as well as sending them to Ireland and Scotland for
prestigious events across the Atlantic.
Now, in 2009 and soon enough moving into 2010, the group has released two new live recordings intended to
represent both sides of what the Barra MacNeils bring to stages the world over. The two live CD’s, In Concert and In
Session, together cover the instrumental and vocal material the group performs in concerts regularly while also
touching on lesser known material from their more formative years and more informal musical gatherings.
As a group, the six MacNeil siblings are widely regarded as one of the greatest live concert acts in the Celtic world.
Hailing from Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, the family group is deeply rooted in Celtic music, culture,
dance, language and history. Their numerous critically acclaimed recordings have included their own original songs
as well as tried and true standards, both instrumental and vocal. These two new live recordings are no exception and
are a must have for any fan of their live shows.
In Concert was recorded live over two consecutive nights at sold out concerts in Truro, Nova Scotia at the Marigold
Cultural Centre. It features a sampling of the Barra MacNeils’ popular theatre and festival main stage show material;
from the high energy of Clumsy Lover Set right into some Stepdance with Lucy down to the longing of A Thousand
Miles and the stellar beauty of Caledonia sung by Lucy, the CD touches on all the energies and emotions of the Barra
MacNeils live concert experience. Other highlights include: the rousing anthem-like Coal Town Road, the fun-filled
sing along spirit of Don’t Call Me Early and Nancy-O to the ripping intense instrumental prowess displayed on Dougie
Mac and The Longest Day and perhaps where it all comes together on the free and easy Haven’t Got a Care.
In Session was recorded over a marathon afternoon and evening pub session at Bunkers in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The
by invitation only event was attended by close friends, immediate and extended family members as well as select fans
and media. People can be heard singing and clapping along, raising a glass of good cheer while keeping their energy
up for dancing with a sampling of the pub’s food menu. It was a magical event as the MacNeils gathered in a circle in
the middle of the room around the upright piano, stand up bass and microphones; playing what seemed to be
effortlessly for hours on end. Only some of the highlights could be captured by the recording crew (who had to set up
in the dining room downstairs) and translated to this CD release but some special moments are certainly represented.
Causeway Crossing is as stirring a representation of the Barra MacNeils roots and beginnings as could ever be heard
or found. The song tells of the cost of progress and the toll the ever-growing economic demands of a modern world
take on the smaller communities and a vanishing more traditional way of life. It was indeed, “built for going away”. The
weight of the Causeway Crossing, however, is deftly lifted with the easy spirit of Dancing We Would Go and the beauty
and innocence of Aimless Love and Every Time. The instrumental selections are outstanding; including: Highland
Village Day, That 70’s Set, the appropriate Welcome to Bunkers and the relentless fifteen minute plus energy of So You
Think You Can Stepdance. Turn this CD up, close your eyes and you are there!
The Barra MacNeils live concert experience brings so much more to the stage than most live acts ever can. Multiple
lead vocalists, beautiful sibling harmonies, top drawer instrumental prowess on a wide variety of acoustic, stringed,
percussion and wind instruments blended with dancing, storytelling, Gaelic songs and a journey through an ancient
culture; it is family entertainment at its highest level.
Steeped in Cape Breton tradition with strong Celtic roots and musical artistry, this diverse and talented family group
continues to wow audiences around the world with their captivating vocals, harmonies and extraordinary
musicianship.
Multi-award winners, the Barra MacNeils have released no less than 14 recordings including: In Concert (2009), In
Session (2009), 20th Anniversary Collection (2007), Christmas Album II (2006), All At Once (2005), Racket In the Attic
(2002), Christmas Album (1999), Until Now (1997), The Question (1995), The Traditional Album (1994), Closer to
Paradise (1993 - Certified Gold in Canada), Timeframe (1990), Rock in the Stream (1989), The Barra MacNeils (1986). In
2001, they released a DVD titled Cape Breton Christmas incorporating music from their live Christmas Concert Special
(as seen on television), plus a visit to Cape Breton, interviews with the Barra MacNeils home at Christmas and music
videos.
Canada's Celtic ambassadors, the Barra MacNeils continue to perform to sold out audiences throughout Canada, the
United States, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom and Europe. From headlining major festivals, concerts, special
guest appearances (Rita MacNeils CTV Christmas Special, performing with The Chieftains) television specials, film and
television placement (Men with Brooms Soundtrack; Racket In The Attic) and their annual Christmas tour, they have
set the course with a solid foundation for success. The Barra MacNeils one-hour Christmas Television Special (2000)
continues to be broadcast on Country Music Television (CMT) and on the Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) network
in the United States. December 2007 saw the broadcast of a new Christmas Special which will no doubt also become
part of the holiday season for years to come.
The Barra MacNeils will continue to do what they love to do best, and that is playing their music for the fans. This
incredibly talented family group will tour Canada, the US and Europe to spread their distinctive brand of Celtic flavour
around the world. All confirmed 2009/2010 live concert dates are listed on the Tour page of their website with more
dates being added all the time.

Three extraordinary voices, two founding singer-songwriters, one singular vision: The Wailin' Jennys continue to
evolve into far more than the melodious sum of their individual talents five years after blowing in on a fresh acoustic
breeze from Canada's mid-western heartland.
Spurred onward by a growing fan base that swoons at their intuitive harmonies and revels in their engaging stage
presence and uplifting repertoire, the Jennys embarked on a giddy blur of activity following the release of their second
album, Firecracker, in August, 2006. Numerous head-turning reviews ("quiet, warm, subtle, mellifluous, almost too
good to be true," noted British daily The Independent) greeted a recording produced by David Travers-Smith (Jane
Siberry, Harry Manx) and featuring a crew of ace musicians led by guitarist Kevin Breit (Norah Jones, k.d. lang). The
trio wooed progressively larger audiences throughout North America while also making successful forays to Australia,
the U.K. and continental Europe. And foremost among an unfolding series of life moments have been a second Juno
Award nomination in Canada, the continuation of a much-cherished relationship with A Prairie Home Companion
(Garrison Keillor's popular National Public Radio show) and a memorable date alongside Rosanne Cash at the
prestigious Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow.
"One Voice," a live staple and highlight of the Jennys' Juno- winning debut album 40 Days, remains a metaphoric
statement of intent that to this day underlines the group's original mandate: three individuals with unique gifts
combining seamlessly into a single beatific entity. Soprano Ruth Moody (guitar, banjo, accordion, bodhran) and mezzo
Nicky Mehta (guitar, harmonica, ukulele, percussion) are charter members who've anchored the Jennys since the first
line-up formed in their Winnipeg hometown. The critical third voice, an alto who fills out the chordal range of the
group's vibrant three-part harmonies, has been filled in turn by Cara Lu?t, Annabelle Chvostek and, now that the latter
has returned to her own solo career, new recruit Heather Masse.
Launching what fans are fondly calling version 3.0 of the Jennys, Heather is a New York-based singer and stand-up
bass player who finds the middle ground between contemporary bluegrass (through her work with roots supergroup
The Wayfaring Strangers) and jazz vocals (which she studied at the New England Conservatory of Music). She gelled
immediately with Ruth and Nicky during an impromptu audition in a bathroom backstage in Philadelphia. Singing raw
versions of "Amazing Grace" and an old Hank Williams song, the three women quickly nailed the essence of the
Jennys' exquisite sound while hinting at exciting new possibilities that will flower in the months of touring and studio
sessions that lie ahead.
"Heather fits in astonishingly well with us," enthuses Nicky. "She's got a smoky, enveloping kind of style. People will
go nuts when they hear her." Adds Ruth, who first learned of Heather from their mutual friend, Crooked Still's Aoife
O'Donovan: "We found a perfect vocal blend the first time with Cara, then we captured it in a different way with
Annabelle. So naturally we were thinking, 'Oh man, can it really happen again?' But we have stumbled on such a rich
treasure. Her voice is just so round and warm."
Ruth Moody has long understood the power of three. She grew up in an accomplished musical family singing with two
sisters, then spent five years fronting Winnipeg's Scuj MacDuhk. When the popular Celtic/roots road warriors broke up
in 2001, she again craved what she calls "the sense of completeness and wholeness that can only come with three
female voices. The Jennys provide a sense of continuity that threads through my entire life."
For her part, Nicky Mehta was on track for post-graduate studies in communications when she released a buzzworthy
solo debut CD and, not long after, signed on as a first-generation Jenny. "The group sort of just happened to us," she
says, laughing. "The idea was to present our individual visions in a larger collective, but before we knew it things had
taken on a life of their own. We've constantly been playing catch up ever since. What's great is that nothing has been
premeditated and we keep being surprised in the most creative, interesting ways."
"Now we've closed another chapter in the Jennys' story and opened a new one," says Ruth. "We're thrilled to be
writing it with Heather. She's a kindred spirit. That we can find the magic while laughing and singing together in a dimly
lit bathroom says it all really."

David "Honeyboy" Edwards was born June 28, 1915 in Shaw, Mississippi. Honeyboy is one of the last living links to
Robert Johnson, and one of the last original acoustic Delta blues players. He is a living legend, and his story is truly
part of history. He is the real deal.
Honeyboy was a part of many of the seminal moments of the blues. As Honeyboy writes in "The World Don't Own Me
Nothing", "...it was in '29 when Tommy Johnson come down from Crystal Springs, Mississippi. He was just a little guy,
tan colored, easy-going; but he drank a whole lot. At nighttime, we'd go there and listen to Tommy Johnson play."
Honeyboy continues, " Listening to Tommy, that's when I really learned something about how to play guitar."
Honeyboy's life has been intertwined with almost every major blues legend, including Robert Johnson, Charlie Patton,
Big Joe Williams, Rice "Sonny Boy Williamson" Miller, Howlin' Wolf, Peetie Wheatstraw, Sunnyland Slim, Lightnin'
Hopkins, Big Walter, Little Walter, Magic Sam, Muddy Waters, and ... well, let's just say the list goes on darn near
forever!
In 1942, Alan Lomax recorded Honeyboy in Clarksdale, Mississippi for the Library of Congress. He recorded a total of
fifteen sides of Honeyboy's music.
Honeyboy didn't record again commercially until 1951, when he recorded "Who May Your Regular Be" for Arc
Records. Honeyboy also cut "Build A Cave" as 'Mr. Honey' for Artist.
Moving to Chicago in the early fifties, Honeyboy played small clubs and street corners with Floyd Jones, Johnny
Temple, and Kansas City Red. In 1953, Honeyboy recorded several songs for Chess that remained un-issued until
"Drop Down Mama" was included in an anthology release.
In 1972, Honeyboy met Michael Frank, and the two soon became fast friends. In 1976, they hit the North Side Blues
scene as The Honeyboy Edwards Blues Band, as well as performing as a duo on occasion. Michael founded Earwig
Records, and in 1979 Honeyboy and his friends Sunnyland Slim, Kansas City Red, Floyd Jones, and Big Walter Horton
recorded "Old Friends".
Honeyboy's early Library of Congress performances and more recent recordings were combined on "Delta
Bluesman", released by Earwig in 1992.
Honeyboy has written several blues hits, including "Long Tall Woman Blues", "Sweet Home Chicago" and "Just Like
Jesse James".
Honeyboy continues up and down the Blues Highway, traveling from juke joint to nightclub to festival, playing real
Delta blues to adoring fans everywhere

Although still relatively young in "blues years", David Gogo has accomplished much in his career. So far he has three
Juno nominations, was named Musician of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, was twice named
"Guitarist of the Year" at the Maple Blues Awards, and has been bestowed with the CBC Saturday Night Blues, "Great
Canadian Blues Award" for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada.
Nine albums have been released under his name and he has been a guest on a number of other artists recordings.
David has composed music for television and major motion pictures and his songs have been performed and
recorded by various musicians worldwide.
Whether he’s showcasing his blistering guitar licks and soulful vocals during his electric performances or drawing the
crowd in with his humour and down-to-earth personality during his acoustic shows, audiences throughout North
America, Europe, and Scandinavia can attest to his outstanding talent.
